Daredevil: The Man without Fear! #3 Guardian Devil Part 3 The Boy Without Justice Written by Jason Blankenship Edited by Aaron Martel Matt sat in his room, silently mourning the loss of his best friend. He knew it was in Lester's best interest to be moved to a foster home, but Matt was finding himself picked on more and more now that Lester was gone. He sighed as he raised his face toward the moon. I miss Lester. I miss having someone to talk to about things. Only a few more years. Then I can get outta Hell's Kitchen and start my life.

"Look guys, it's the blind Daredevil. Still taking risks, Murdock? Or did you going blind put an end to that?"
The lead bully laughed and Matt closed his book, standing. He locked his blind eyes on the lead bully, and smiled. His smile held amusement, delight and a touch of danger.
"You really wanna see the Daredevil in action? Take your best shot. Unless you're afraid of the blind boy." I know I can take him, and with Lester gone I need to start watching my own back. Now's as good a time as any.
The bully pulled back and swung a haymaker that had no technique, only power. With Matt's senses he might as well have been throwing a balloon at Matt. Matt's smile widened as he spun out of the way and grabbed the lead bully's arm.
"Do you know how little pressure it takes to break a person's arm from this angle?" The lead bully's eyes widened. And Matt's grin grew manic as the bully was suddenly very scared of the blind boy.
"You wouldn't. You'd get in trouble, and wreck your perfect grades."
Matt laughed at this, and despite the fact that he was whispering the bully heard him perfectly. "You really think they'll believe that a blind boy did this?"

Matt sat in the courtroom, listening while the evidence was presented in the matter of Lester's father beating him. The 3 weeks had been etched indelibly in Matt's mind. He had been trying to keep tabs on Les, and his dad had agreed to take time out of his busy training schedule for the hearing since it was important to Matt.
"And in my professional opinion, the injuries, while being consistent with this type of assault, appear to be self-inflicted," said a doctor, an expert witness for the prosecution.
Lester stood up and began screaming at the doctor. He grabbed a pen from his case worker and threw it at the doctor, nailing him in the throat. “Bailiff, restrain that boy and someone call an ambulance for God's sake," the judge bellowed.

Matt stood outside Lester's cell, trying to figure out what to say to the angry boy. He sighed softly and figured he might as well ask the question on his mind.
"Les, did you fake your injuries?"
Lester lit a cigarette and sighed, "No, I didn't. Not that it matters much anymore, Murdock... seems I went a wee bit o'erboard and killed the doctor...I jus’ wish the system worked, Matt..."
Matt had heard the telltale jump of Lester's heart. Matt knew he was lying. Matt sighed.
"The system does work, Les. It's objective, unbiased, every man is equal within that courtroom. Justice is blind, and absolute."
Lester took a long drag from his cigarette and laughed, "Ye sound like a lawyer, ‘cept I hear words and not squeaks... idealism’s somthin’ guys like us should never have Matt. They'll just take it away from us."
"Not if we fight for it." Matt turned and walked out, a tear falling from his face as he knew that he had just lost his best friend.

Madison Square Garden was packed to capacity, as fight fans from around the world had gathered to see "Battlin'" Jack Murdock's title shot against the champion Stan "The Man" McDaniel. Matt was thrilled to be just outside his dad's locker room, waiting for the fight. He knew his dad was gonna be champ. Matt paused as he heard someone else in the room with his Dad.
"It's your turn to take a fall, Jack."
"I don't work for you, Fixer; I went straight a long time ago."
The Fixer laughed. "That's what you think, Murdock. You're 42 years old. A bit old for a boxing renaissance. You think my guys haven't been taking falls? I was building you up for tonight. When you drop, you're gonna make me very wealthy."
"And what if I don't?"
"Well, I know that you're a principled man, so I know that I could threaten you, and it wouldn't get me what I want. So, what I'm going to do is ask, how would your boy survive without his father? I mean, a blind boy, all helpless and alone... Hell's Kitchen is no place for a kid like that, especially without a father."
Matt heard his father's jaw clench.

The newspaper the next day didn't say anything about Jack Murdock other than his triumphant win over Stan McDaniel, called the "Upset of the Century." It didn't mention that he was savagely beaten to death outside Madison Square Garden later that night. It had nothing about the police official declaring it a random mugging that got out of hand. And it certainly didn't mention that Jack Murdock left behind a son who made a promise that night to fight for justice by any means necessary...
