Unlimited Marvels #7 Dog of War, Part 2: Old Soldiers Featuring... Wolverine Written by Daniel Dyer Edited by Aaron Martel War’s hell. That’s my mantra. To me, it’s just another day. Here I am, about to be air dropped into Germany. Alone. ‘Course, I’ve been alone my whole life. Nothin’ new there. And I ain’t afraid o’ this Nazi scum. They’re simply more fascists with guns. I don’t need guns. I got all I need right here, thinks Logan as he rubs his knuckles. “Logan, we’re over the drop! Chute up!” “No thanks,” states Logan as he jumps out of the copter. “Sir, is he crazy?!” the pilot shouts. “Relax, Officer. The fall won’t kill him,” says Samuel Carpenter, Director of Department H. “But, Sir, he still feels pain.” Carpenter grins. “I think he gets off on it.”

(*Editor’s Note: Translated from German-- Aaron.)
Mission parameters: kill Hitler. Simple. Direct. To the point. My kinda mission. Logan, having survived his leap, sneaks past some guards and into a Nazi castle. If they woulda just sent me in a few years ago, the war woulda been over by now.
“<He’s here! The American!>”* Logan hears down the hall.
The American? he wonders as a Nazi soldier runs around the corner and directly into him.
“<W... who?>” stammers the soldier.
Logan grins and pops his claws on both hands. A look of horror spreads over the Nazi’s face.
“<Hey, bub,>” Logan starts in German as he holds up his claws in a menacing manner, “<Was wonderin’. You know where I can find this Hitler guy? Me an’ him need ta... talk.>”
The Nazi remains speechless.
Logan grabs the Nazi, holding his claws to the German’s face. ”<I hate repeating myself.>”
“At ease, soldier,” comes a voice from behind. “Hitler’s not here.”
Logan looks behind him and sees a man in a blue uniform with white sleeves. His boots and gloves are crimson. Down his midsection are red and white stripes and there is a big white star on his chest. His blue helmet is lengthened to mask his identity and has a white “A” on its forehead, and in his right hand he carries a shield, which comes to a point at its base, with red and white stripes going from the middle to the bottom. The top half of the shield is blue with white stars.
“Heh. The American,” Logan says.
“Captain America,” the man in blue states as he salutes.
Logan ignores the salute. “Hitler’s gone?”
“Hitler was never here.”
Logan retracts his claws and tosses the Nazi to the Captain.
“Where are you going?” asks the Captain.
“My mission’s scrubbed. No point in me...”
Before Logan can finish a wall opens up and a man dressed in red emerges, a hooded mask covering his face.
“Zemo!” yells the Captain.
“I’m flattered, Captain.”
“Where’s Johnson?!” demands the Captain.
Baron Heinrich Zemo. I’ve read the reports. Zemo’s one of the top, if not the top, scientists of the Nazis. The Captain here has brawled with him the most of anyone.
A grin forms under Zemo’s hood. “Mr. Johnson is right here,” Zemo states as a metal table rises from the ground, a tarp over it, covering what appears to be a body.
“Matt!” yells Captain America. “What have you done?”
Zemo laughs. “Cured him.”
The Captain questions, “Cured him?”
“Your comrade, Matthew Johnson, was dying. In exchange for a cure, your ‘friend’ defected, Captain.”
Zemo removes the tarp, revealing Johnson’s new body: a metallic, robotic shell that only houses Johnson’s brain.
“What have you done?” Captain America repeats.
“He’s the first of his kind. A cyborg built with...”
Ya know what?” interrupts Logan. “I think we’ve had enough chit-chat, bub.”
Logan lunges himself at Zemo, only to be stopped by Matt, who instinctively grabs the Canadian with an outstretched hand.
Sitting up, Matt says, “I am sorry,” and he throws Logan through a stone wall.
“Matt? What have you become?” asks Captain America.
“He has become the perfect warrior,” answers Zemo. “Your better.”
“Ya know...” Logan starts as he pushes rubble off of himself, “...I really hate being thrown through walls.”
The short stack then throws himself at the cyborg, clawing at it with his bone claws, but making no impact.
The cyborg then grabs Logan by his throat, squeezing as he holds the runt out away from his body.
“Adamantium,” Zemo states. “A new alloy. Virtually unbreakable.”
Cap runs to aid Logan but is swatted back.
Zemo laughs. “Farewell, Captain. Johnson, kill them quickly.” And Zemo leaves.
“Go... argh...” Logan says, his hands trying to loosen Johnson’s grip.
“I’m not leaving you, soldier.” Cap hurls his shield and it dents the cyborg.
Johnson is startled enough; he drops Logan.
Logan lands on his feet, rubbing his neck. “How...?”
“The Germans aren’t the only ones who know about adamantium,” Cap answers.
“I really am sorry,” the cyborg says while approaching.
“Ya mind?” asks Logan as he gestures to the shield.
“No. He was my friend. I think we can reason with him.” Cap then advances on Johnson, his hands out, showing he’s unarmed. “Matt. It’s me,” Cap says, pulling his mask off.
“Steve?” Johnson questions.
“I know you. You are a brave and good soldier.”
“I... didn’t want to die, Steve.”
“Why didn’t you come to me?”
“And what would you have done?” Matt asks, his anger increasing.
“We could have taken you to...”
“Where?! A hospital room to die?!” Matt screams and advances on Steve. “There’s no cure! This was the only option!”
“We could have found a way...”
“THERE IS NO WAY!” screams Johnson as he smashes the lab table.
Sorry, "Steve"... "Hey, bub!” yells Logan. “Don’t forget about me!”
And Logan leaps on Johnson again, Cap’s shield in hand.
“NO!” Cap yells.
Logan, using the tip of the shield, begins prying the cyborg’s chest plate off. “Gotta be done, Captain.”
“Get off me, you…!” Matt protests.
But before Johnson can retaliate, Logan pulls out a wad of wires, shutting down the Nazis’ cyborg super-soldier.

Later, on the roof of the castle, Captain America meets Logan again.
“Any luck?” asks Logan.
“No. Zemo’s gone,” Captain America answers, disappointment in his voice. “About what you heard in there...”
“Easy, Captain. I have my fair share of secrets.”
Cap nods at that as an Allied copter lowers a rope ladder.
“About your buddy...” Logan begins.
“Forget about it, soldier. You did what needed to be done. Matt was already gone. He sold his soul.”
Logan nods.
“And when I find Zemo...” the Captain starts, “He will regret what he did here.”
Logan just has to grin at that, seeing Cap grab a hold of the ladder. Not such a boy scout, at that.
“Hey, runt,” Logan hears while the copter disappears in the distance.
“Creed,” Logan says, not turning to look at him.
“The Department sent me to pick you up.”
“That so?”
“Looks like you blew it.”
“Hitler wasn’t here, ‘Sabretooth’. How ya figure we got false intel?” Logan still does not turn around.
“Beats me,” Creed lies.
“Works for me,” Logan says under his breath, extending his claws. Then the short Canuck turns and charges at Sabretooth.
Sabretooth stands there, grinning. “You’re not as dumb as I thought.”
Creed moves fast, sidestepping Logan and grabbing the “runt” by his wrists and throwing him from the roof.
Creed turns on his comm-link. “I have the runt. Hurry. He may only stay unconscious for minutes.” Sabretooth looks to where he threw Logan and sees him standing and growling.
“Scratch that,” Creed reports. “He’s conscious.”
A roar can be heard from miles around as Logan leaps at Sabretooth, clawing and slashing at him.
“Some temper you have, ‘bub’,” Creed says as he throws Logan off him. “Careful, before I have to put you down...permanently.”
Logan says nothing, simply circling Creed in the way a hungry wolf would circle its prey.
“It was never anything personal, ‘Wolverine’.”
As Logan is about to leap at his prey, he is blasted with an electrical charge. “AAAAARRGH!” he screams as the charge continues through his body.
“It was just a job,” Creed mutters. “Finding the perfect subject.”
Logan’s screams continue on, until he finally collapses, succumbing to the darkness of unconsciousness.
Sabretooth then waves down a copter with a swastika on the side, with what appears to be an energy cannon attached to it.
Creed speaks into his comm link. “Bring ‘er in, boys. Weapon X is ready fer pick up.”
