The Sensational Spider-Girl #6 Written by Sononsj Edited by Daniel Dyer (Spider-Man Beyond) May Parker is a typical teenage girl. Oh, and she’s the daughter of Spider-Man. She had been out web-swinging, when an over-eager photographer snapped her picture for the Daily Bugle. Scared and not knowing what to do, she ran. She now realizes she should have somehow gotten hold of the film, because when she arrives home, her parents confront her with the late edition of the Bugle, with a picture of Spider-Girl and a “WHO IS THE SPIDER-GIRL?” headline slapped smack-dab on the front page. “May, we need to talk,” said Peter, the once and former Spider-Man. “How- how do you even know it’s me?” she stammers, not knowing what to do or say. “Don’t you lie to me, young lady! We both know you’re the only one who could possibly be Spider-Girl!“ he says. “What were you thinking?! You disobeyed us, May. You broke our trust. Think of your mother! Think about how worried we were, not knowing if you were out risking your neck! And not only were you breaking our trust, but now you went and got your picture slapped on the front page of the Bugle! Now the whole world knows about Spider-Girl. Including the bad guys!” “Oh, like you never made any mistakes!” screams Mayday. “Don’t yell at me, May. That was different!” “How was it different?!” “May, I told you not to yell! Go to your room!” “Ahh! This is so unfair!” *

May lay in her bed, rehashing the conversation and adding in all the things she should have said. If there was any hope of her parents letting her continue to be Spider-Girl, she had snuffed it out with her yelling. May turned on the news in the hopes of distracting her mind from the conversation. Her mind, however, kept wandering back. She realized that her parents did have a point. She imagined what it must have been like, not knowing if their daughter was out dying somewhere. A special bulletin caught her interest, though. They were saying something about some kind of mechanical monster, rampaging through town. Suddenly, the news footage switched from the television studio to live field footage. The monster was maybe eighty feet high. It was cutting a wave of destruction across the city. Suddenly, it spotted the news camera. “Spider-Man!” a voice rang out from the robot’s operator. “This is a challenge! A duel to the death, between you, and my latest creation: the Spider-Slayer Mark XVII!!! Ignore this challenge, and I will burn this city to ashes!” The Spider-Slayer v16 then stepped on the camera, crushing the camera person behind it. May was worried. The Spider-Slayer v16 had challenged her father, but he was missing a leg. He couldn’t possibly fight that robotic monstrosity. She had to go. But-- her parents had forbade her to be Spider-Girl. Her father always used to say, “With great power, comes great responsibility.” Was it more responsible to be a life-saving web-slinger… or an obedient daughter? She couldn’t let those people die. NOBODY dies on my watch! If I succeed, those people will live! There was no question about it. She had to go save lives. *

Peter and MJ were discussing what they should have said with May. They then turned on the news to get their minds off the subject. He saw the same bulletin as May did. “MJ, I- I have to go! That monster- It was probably created by Alistair Smythe. He won’t stop killing people until I stop it. If I fail, those people will die!” “Peter- no. You can’t! You’re missing a leg, for goodness’ sake!” “MJ, I love you. I swear I’ll come back. You just keep an eye on… May.” He ran up the stairs two at a time, despite his disability. “May! Are you still in there? May! Open this door, May. Open this door!!!” He kicked down the door with his good foot, only to discover… An open window, and a fluttering curtain. “MAAAAAY!!!” *

Spider-Girl was at the scene of the destruction, desperately trying to stop the monster. She shot a web on either side of the mechanical monster from her perch on a tall building’s wall. Most opponents would have taunted me with the standard “You missed me, you accursed web-head! Bah!” to which I would reply with a snappy “I never miss!” but this mechanical Godzilla’s operator has been pretty silent, you think to yourself even as you hold on to each web-line and pull tightly. Omigod! This monster’s pretty fast and- it’s ducking! You let out a small scream as you realize you’re about to crash. You let go of the web-lines, but it’s no use. You’ve already tugged hard and collision is imminent. “Heads up, everybody! It’s the amazing Spider-Man!!! He floats through the air with the greatest of ease-!!” You see a flash of red and blue. Instinctively, you know this man is your father. He swings in on a web-line, just in time to rescue you from becoming a splat on the wall. “Heya, Pops. Come here often?” “May, this is no time for jokes! We have to stop that mechanical monstrosity! Got any idea on how to stop it?” “A few.” *

The monster was already a few blocks ahead and had not seen Spider-Man. But that was part of the plan. He web-swung in front of the monster, taunting it. At last its operator spoke: “Spider-Man! At last! You’ll pay for what you did to my uncle!” “Your uncle? Then that means you’re either Spencer or Alistair Smythe’s nephew! Nope,” he said glancing into the cockpit, “scratch that, niece, not nephew!” A pair of webs shot out on either side of the mechanical monster. “Ha! You missed me, you accursed web-head!” Ms. Smythe yelled out. “Nope!” shouted Spider-Girl, grinning under her mask. “I never miss!” She pulled herself on the webs. Once again, the monster ducked. Yes! I knew it was gonna duck! The momentum landed her in an old water tower. After making sure the water had short-circuited her target, she leapt off. Spider-Man then rescued the operator. *

The battle was over, and the monster defeated, as both father and daughter swung home. “I just turned her over to the police. Not bad, May. Not bad at all.” “You didn’t do so bad yourself, even with the leg.” “I’m flattered, but you’re still even more grounded for sneaking out.” “Aww, Dad!” The ever-lovin’ end!
