Batman Beyond #5 Trial and Error Written and Edited by Daniel Dyer (Editors’ Note: Before reading this issue, be sure to catch Titans Tomorrow #1 & #2, Dan.) It’s been three months. Three long months of intense training. Huntress tested Terry on his endurance, his strength, and his mind. All before he was even allowed back in the Bat-suit. He was taught the functions of the suit. Its strengths. Its weaknesses. Night vision capabilities. Stealth mode. Weaponry. The suit has it all. Finally he was taught how to drive. And not just any ride. Not at all. The Batmobile. An advanced hover car. It was designed many years ago. Today its still cutting edge. Nothing else can match it in speed. This model Batmobile could give any of the Flashes a run for their money. Now, Huntress has returned to Bludhaven and Terry sits alone in his Batcave. What’s his focus tonight? A murder? A shoot out gone wrong? No. Nothing like that. He’s thinking of his future. In a week he’ll be moving into a dorm room at Kane Academy. ***

Tim Drake sits at home alone, watching news feeds on his vid screen. His day’s been a tiring one. He knows what’s going on in the world today. Not just in Gotham, but in other places. Knows who has fallen. And he’s next. He can hear the gas seeping through the vents right before an electrical charge blasts a hole in the wall. In walks Judge, “Commissioner Timothy Drake, our jury finds you guilty!” Tim stands up, his knees wobbling. “Judge and Jury, I presume.” Play the act, Tim. Know your opponents. Make them play your game. “And what about my counsel?” He grins as he notices Judge concentrating. Psi-shield must be working.“We are the only counsel you get.” Judge grins as she continues, “Lynch... Volt... you can finish this one. Silent Vapor’s already weakened him.” “That’s what you think,” Tim says as he leaps over Lynch’s steel cable that was charged by Volt’s blasts. >> Jury. This one may be more trouble than the last. Careful,<< Judge telepathically informs her team. Tim notices the team focusing their attention on Judge. She’s the ticket. Tim throws down smoke pellets and escapes by the time the smoke clears. Jury looks to Judge and she only shakes her head. “I couldn’t read him,” is all she can say. ***

The Batcave. Barbara Gordon has been doing this for more years than she can count. She began as a “fangirl” at a costume party. She dressed as the Bat. A Batgirl. Things took a drastic turn when Killer Moth showed up. She was the daughter of Commissioner James Gordon and wanted to be a cop just like him. He had other plans for his only daughter and risking her life wasn’t part of his plans. But when Killer Moth attacked the costume party, it was up to Batgirl to stop him. Along the way she met up with Batman and the first Robin. Dick Grayson. Eventually, Dick and her became... involved. Those memories are rather painful now. It started out as the then Boy Wonder having a crush on her. He was the one helping her while the Batman tried to get her to stop wearing the cowl. In time, she was accepted as one of them. After a few years, Batgirl retired and shortly after she took a pullet meant for her dad, paralyzing her. For awhile, what the Joker did to her took its toll. She was upset and she pulled away from everyone. Then she got a new determination. She ignored her handicap and did what she could. She became Oracle, an information broker. Utilizing agents, she helped more people as Oracle than she ever did as Batgirl. She remains Oracle to this day, but she has a deal with the now Commissioner to keep her agents out of Gotham City. “Intruder alert,” an electronic voice says as alarms blare. “Display,” Barbara orders her computers. The monitors display alone woman walking through the catacombs. “Computer, allow entry.” And seconds later the woman enters the cave. “Barbara,” she says with tears in her eyes. “Ariana, what’s wrong?” “I don’t care about your methods,” Ari tells her. “Tim’s in trouble. He sent me away so I’d be safe. I begged him to ask for help.” “Ariana, calm down. Tell me what’s going on.” ***

“Terry,” an electronic voice comes over his computer as the image of Oracle appears on his monitor. “What’s the sidge, oh wise one?” “Knock it off. This is urgent. There’s a group of killers in pursuit of Commissioner Drake. They are meta and very dangerous. They have already killed other ‘capes’.” “Then why go after Drake?” “Ask questions later. Go stop them now. Hopefully back up will be on the way.” ***

Tim Drake runs along the streets of Gotham. He has assessed some of the Jury’s weaknesses but there is still no way he can beat them all. Yet, there’s no way he can get any police backup. This is too personal. The Jury’s after former Titans and his past as Robin cannot be brought to the light. “HALT!” Judge yells as Tim runs straight into one of her force fields. Poniard approaches, his foot long knife out and at the ready. “No more of your tricks, bird boy.” Poniard launches his knife, but a black and red bat-shaped disc flies out, hitting the knife, knocking it to the ground. “Then how about a couple of mine?” Terry questions as he comes down, feet first on Poniard. >> The rumors are true! There is a new Bat! Distract the Bat, but our primary goal is Drake!<< announces Judge telepathically. Hellebore slashes his syringes at Terry, who ducks, but gets snared by Lynch’s steel cable. “Volt?” “My pleasure,” Volt states, sending a charge through the cable. “AAARRRGGHHH!” screams the new Batman, his suit taking the brunt of the charge. Tim stands back and thinks, They’ll kill him. I have to do something.>> Poniard, now!<< “Hey, Drake!” Poniard says, picking up his knife, “I think you should worry about yourself.” Poniard launches the knife once again and Tim leaps out of the way, only to have the knife turn and follow him. “What the...?!” Tim gets up and starts running, the knife following him every step of the way. Tim leaps to a fire escape ladder, swinging up onto it and begins going higher and higher, the knife still after him. Tim reaches the roof, but trips and the knife continues on its path, when suddenly a blast of what appears to be pure solar energy hits the knife, stopping its path. “Who...?” “Hey, Uncle Tim,” states an orange skinned man, in a blue costume as he flies down to Tim. “Can we lend a hand?” he asks, gesturing to Cardinal and Fusion, who stand on either side of him. “Titans Together?” Continued in Titans Tomorrow #3
