Rematch

Colonel Nick Fury stands up straight, hands behind his back, in the conference room. He is an old soldier who worked his way up to become Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., a top secret government organization. By his side are two agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. To his right is a stout man with a thick moustache and a bowler hat. To the colonel’s left is a young blonde woman.
On the other side of the room is Spider-Man. The young adventurer hangs upside down on a thin web-line, unsure of what’s happening here. So far no one has said a word until Spider-Man quips, “Okay, okay, you got me. I’ll never jaywalk again.”
“Hmmph,” comes from the man in the bowler.
Nick Fury then speaks up. “You are here because you’ve recently had a confrontation with Otto Octavius.”
“Oh, Ocky? How’s the old bean been?”
“This isn’t a joke,” says the man in the bowler.
“Really? I’m sorry, I was just assuming it was. Ya know, cause of that ridiculous nose and moustache disguise. Between you and me, you’re not fooling anyone.”
Before the man in the bowler can counter, Nick Fury speaks up. “You interfered with Octavius’s attack at Empire University.”
“Don’t you read the papers? According to the Bugle, I was behind the attack,” Spider-Man states glumly.
“I put very little stock in what that blowhard Jameson thinks.”
Ya know, I think I like this guy. “Okay, so you believe I wanted to stop Octavius. What does that have to do with you guys?”
“Sorry, that’s classified information, son.”
“Then why am I here?”
“With luck, you can provide us with information we may need that can help stop Octavius,” answers Fury.
“You do know that I got my butt handed to me, right?”
“We aren’t asking for your help fighting him.”
“We want information,” speaks up the bowler wearing man.
“Well, if wants were... how does the saying go? Something about nuts and Christmas? Oh well...”
“You little...”
“Dugan!” shouts Fury. “Webhead, we know you aren’t one of the bad guys. We know you want to help.”
“Okay, what’s my favorite color, then?”
Both the bowler wearing man (Dugan), and the blonde slap their foreheads.
Fury lights a cigar. He knows what he must do.
“Octavius was working with Professor Miles Warren under the table for Osborn Industries.”
Harry’s dad?
“Colonel?”
“He’s in the thick of it,” explains Fury. “He needs to know the stakes.” Fury takes a puff of his cigar and continues, “They were performing tests on live human subjects. DNA splicing and the like. It’s believed they wished to create their own super soldier, so to rush the project, they performed unethical and illegal experiments.”
“If you know all this,” Spidey comments, “Then why haven’t you went after Osborn or this Miles Warren?”
“There’s not enough hard evidence. A man like Osborn is a slick S.O.B.,” Fury answers. “After the accident that grafted those tentacles to Octavius, he was taken to a military hospital until S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives could collect him. He was able to escape. The accident apparently created a neural link between the Doctor and his tentacles. It also affected his mental state. He’s now a mad genius and believes Osborn is behind his accident. There is no evidence to suggest this, but we can’t dismiss it either.”
Harry’s dad? Harry’s dad is a criminal mastermind? I’ve only met the guy once or twice, but I didn’t get murdering psychopath from the guy.
“Spider-Man, will you help us?”
“Yeah, sure, whatever you need...”
