Crane Farm, 2 months later
Standing on a hill overlooking the main pasture, Ethan looks around, scanning his parents’ property one last time. In the weeks since the meteor shower, Sheriff Hill and his wife have taken Ethan in. They let him keep Radar, but with his newfound abilities, they probably couldn’t keep Radar away if they wanted to.
“Well, Radar, this is it. Littlehaven is rebuilding from the meteor shower, and it’s time we do the same.”
“Rrrr, ruff?”
Still amazed at his ability to understand Radar, Ethan replies, “I haven’t heard from Darius. He’s been put into foster care. I’ve sent him a few letters, but there’s been no return yet.”
“Ruff.”
“No, I don’t think we should take him with us. At the moment, we’re both pretty dangerous. I’m sorry for running out on Kevan and Mary, but neither one of us have our abilities under control.” Since the storm, Ethan’s entire thought process has become faster and more precise. He can remember every moment of his life with clarity and precision, as well as anything he has ever seen or read. His vision is sharper and more focused, and he can see things that the normal human eye can’t. Frighteningly, he can even get vague impressions of shapes through walls if he focuses hard enough. Radar also has enhanced strength and speed, and is smarter as well.
“Rrrr.”
“No, Radar, you just think you do.”
“Ruff...”
“Come on, boy, it’s time to go.” Ethan looks around again. Tears begin to well up in his eyes. The police tape has been removed, but in his thoughts, it’s still there. Though the rain has since washed away the bloodstains, he can still see them in his mind. Focusing his thoughts and will, he draws ambient energy from around him into his body. The pull of gravity slowly melts away. Concentrating, he propels himself upward, flying into the hundreds of feet into the air. Radar follows close behind.
“Just one second, Radar...” His eyes are drawn back to his home. Watching the farm for a moment, he begins to cry again. “All right, Radar, let’s go.” Looking off over the horizon, he focuses, and they rocket away with a sonic boom.
Not even CLOSE to the end...
